Introducing the Redefining Freedom Speakers Bureau
Schools are back. Campuses are coming alive. Companies, civic institutions, and community organizations are planning their fall programs. And as America enters the final four months of its 250th anniversary year, there could not be a more important time to talk about who we are as citizens—and what each of us must do to help sustain the remarkable American experiment.
These questions do not stop at America’s borders. Across the world, democracies are confronting declining public trust, deepening polarization, threats to free expression, civic disengagement, and growing uncertainty about the future of democratic institutions. Meeting this moment will require citizens and leaders at home and abroad to learn from one another, strengthen our alliances, and build bridges across nations and cultures.
The Redefining Freedom Center of Virginia is proud to introduce the Redefining Freedom Speakers Bureau, a new national and international platform bringing timely, nonpartisan conversations about freedom, democracy, leadership, citizenship, and civic responsibility directly to universities, schools, community colleges, corporations, think tanks, institutes, nonprofits, and communities in the United States and around the world. The Speakers Bureau will serve as an extension of the Center’s National Civic Formation Initiative, engaging audiences not simply in what governments, institutions, or elected officials should do, but in a more enduring question:
What is our responsibility as “We the People”—and as members of a global community committed to human freedom and democratic values?
Through keynote addresses, campus conversations, town halls, executive programs, student engagements, symposiums, and community forums, the Center helps audiences move beyond political division and toward constructive civic action. The Center also works with global allies and partner institutions to exchange ideas, strengthen democratic culture, build relationships across national and cultural differences, and explore the responsibilities shared by free societies. At a time when democratic values are being tested around the world, these partnerships remind us that no democracy exists in isolation. Strong democracies learn from one another, support one another, and remain committed to the dignity and freedom of people everywhere.

Nelson’s newest book, Redefining Freedom: Thoughts on Bridging Divides and Renewing the American Promise at 250, released in April 2026, offers a hopeful and practical framework for rebuilding trust, renewing citizenship, and strengthening the foundations of American democracy.

Potential partners include K–12 schools and school systems; colleges, universities, and law schools; corporations; foundations and nonprofits; think tanks and public-policy institutes; faith communities; cultural institutions; America 250 programs; diplomatic and international organizations; and institutions throughout Europe and other allied democratic nations.
America’s 250th anniversary is more than a celebration of our past. It is an invitation to take responsibility for our future—and to recommit ourselves to the democratic values that connect us with allies and partners around the world. Democracy does not sustain itself. Strong institutions and enduring alliances matter—but so do informed citizens, courageous leaders, healthy communities, mutual understanding, and the willingness to remain in conversation with one another across political, cultural, and national boundaries.
